Task: Calculate System Material and Energy Balances

Objective

Calculate material and energy balances and evaluate performance parameters.

Subtasks

  1. Identify all process specifications and process conditions of streams and process units necessary to determine the process material balances.
  2. Calculate and check the process material and energy flows in sufficient detail to determine at least the following quantities for all streams entering and leaving each unit operation on the flow diagram
    • Flow Rate
    • Composition
    • Pressure
    • Temperature
  3. Prepare a material and energy balance flow diagram of the process.
  4. Prepare a material and energy balance table. Key the columns of the table to the process flow diagram.
  5. Identify all assumptions made in developing the material and energy balances. Review the check list for material and energy balances.
  6. Prepare the material and energy balance analysis report.

Comments

  • The emphasis of the material and energy balance analysis should be on determining the operations - not on identifying equipment hardware specifications.
  • All calculations should be prepared as per the project calculation file format guidelines.
  • Where appropriate use recommended factors for preliminary designs.
