Material and Energy Balances

Once a flow diagram has been prepared, the next step is to calculate the material and energy balances.

TASK: Calculate System Material and Energy Balances

GUIDE: Material and Energy Balance Calculations

Material and energy balance calculations effectively summarize and present basic design data.

Supporting Calculations

Calculation sets are prepared to clarify the basis of values given in the material and energy balance data tables. This is a guide to the preparation of material and energy balance calculations and supporting documentation.

Summary Forms

The following worksheets provide a convenient means for displaying the results of mass and energy balance calculations for each unit operation. Also the basic assumptions and idealizations used in developing the balances can be recorded and displayed.

WORKSHEET: Unit Operation Mass Balance

WORKSHEET: Unit Operation Energy Balance

WORKSHEET: Process Stream Balance Data

WORKSHEET: Utility Balance Data

GUIDE: Engineering Data and Assumptions

Three major areas of engineering assumptions are to be included. Sources of data, reaction assumptions, and unknown physical properties should be documented.

GUIDE: Material and Energy Balance Flow Diagram Preparation

A guide to the preparation of material and energy balance flow diagrams with supporting documentation is given.

REPORT: Material and Energy Balances

A guide to the preparation of process material and energy balance reports for systems is given. Such reports effectively summarize and current available information/data for the process.
